All handles are made from bamboo cane, imported to our specifications.
As you would expect from a world-class timpani stick, all canes are weighed, measured and knot matched to ensure superb balance and a matched sound.
Each cane receives a total of over 30 processes, and is meticulously finished to the highest possible standard before it is considered ready for the head to be added. Other makers use quicker ways to finish cane handles, some of which involve dip varnishing and machinery, but we believe that hand making our sticks using real craftsmanship is worth the extra time involved: so will you when you receive your order.
The heads have a wooden core as standard, with the smaller size heads having a rounded disc rather than a complete ball centre. This enables the stick to have the right amount of contact area without being too heavy. If the sticks need to be lighter than the standard wood core model, perhaps for playing on calfskin, cork cores can be specified at no extra cost.
The different tonal qualities of the sticks are achieved by layering pure lambs wool felt which is made to our specifications. Using more than one layer, with the layers having differing sizes and thickness, means that there is a great deal of control over the sound made by the stick.
As with the varying core sizes, the method we use is time consuming, but worth it: your sticks are your voice, after all!
The bamboo cane handles are clearly marked, to make the correct selection during a concert or rehearsal as easy as possible.
